Promoting a new website

Promoting a new site can be a fairly time consuming process so it's a good idea to concentrate on the big wins initially. Everything you do will contribute to the long term success of your site, so be patient - it will pay off.

Get your link everywhere

  • Get listed in the major business directories such as Free Index and Yell
  • Submit a link on Google maps and other map based directories
  • Ensure you have a presence on specialist directories relevant to your business
  • Make sure your URL is included on your email signature for every email you send
  • If you use chat rooms or forums, ensure your URL is listed in your signature for each post, then post a lot!
  • Start approaching relevant sites for link exchanges
  • Be prepared to pay for links on the most respected sites
  • Have your URL visible on your stationery, business cards, screen savers, stickers - in fact everywhere you can think of!

Remember - the more relevant and respected the sites are which link to you the more benefit you'll gain as doing this will also help with your organic Google ranking.

Things not to do

  • Post your URL on 'link farms' - these are sites which exist purely as a list of unstructured links to other sites. You can recognise a link farm as they are often poorly designed and will accept links from absolutely everyone.
  • Repeatedly submit your URL to search engines - this is considered spam, instead let them find you
